About Cinco Sentidos: Playa

Embark on a journey through the senses at Cinco Sentidos (“five senses”) Yoga Retreat. Led by Seattle-based Yoga Teacher Emily Dalgo at Mahekal Beach Resort in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, Cinco Sentidos is an all-inclusive yoga retreat for anyone looking for both relaxation and adventure who wants to take a journey of sensory awakening.

Nestled between the turquoise waters of Mexico's Caribbean coast and the lush jungle, Playa del Carmen offers the perfect blend of excitement and escape. Join likeminded yogis at Cinco Sentidos to deepen your yoga practice and discover how the senses can anchor your wellness practices.

Our home for the week, Mahekal Beach Resort, was named the Best Beachfront All-Inclusive Resort in the Riviera Maya. Mahekal is a serene, beachfront oasis with bungalow-style suites surrounded by lush tropical gardens, complete with four pools, open-air restaurants and bars, and is just two blocks from Playa's famous 5th Avenue.

Itinerary

  • Welcome to Playa! On Saturday, guests arrive at Mahekal Beach Resort and check into their Bungalows at 3:00. Arriving earlier? Check in and leave your belongings with the front desk and enjoy the pool or ocean. We come together at 7:00pm for our Welcome Reception to meet and mingle before dinner.

  • On Sunday we begin our journey through the senses, starting with a 7:30am vinyasa yoga practice in the sand at Palms Garden, overlooking the Caribbean Sea. After 9am breakfast, we'll head to the Tulum Ruins to see one of the best-preserved coastal Maya sites in Mexico, perched on cliffs with breathtaking sea views. After lunch, swim in 3 jungle cenotes with crystal-clear waters and lush surroundings. We'll return to Mahekal and unwind and debrief at dinner.

  • We'll start our day with 90 minutes of vinyasa yoga in the Spa Garden grass, surrounded by swaying palms. After breakfast, our aromatherapy workshop will introduce you to new essential oils and natural incenses that you can use to enhance your yoga or wellness rituals. Enjoy the day at the resort pools or swimming in the ocean, or walk into downtown Playa. The day is yours! We reconvene for a 6pm slow flow yoga class in the Ceremony Garden, followed by a special tasting experience at one of Mahekal's restaurants.

  • Morning vinyasa yoga will jumpstart your connection to touch before heading to the beach for a workshop to experience the magic of cold therapy. We will learn about the wellness benefits of cold exposure, as well as helpful breathing techniques, and will take turns in the ice bath! At 5pm, we exchange cold for heat at a temazcal ceremony hosted by Spirituality Riviera Maya. The temazcal is an outdoor Mayan sweat lodge, enriched with medicinal herbs, designed to elevate consciousness and achieve profound detoxification. This sacred ceremony can be intense, but will offer a communal healing environment. We return for dinner together at 8pm.

  • We will start our day with a sunrise paddleboarding and meditation session and enjoy the stillness and silence of the early morning ("la madrugada"). Enjoy your final day in Playa, soak up all of the sounds, sights, smells, tastes, and physical sensations. Our 5pm slow flow yoga session will conclude with a closing circle followed by an 8pm family dinner.

  • We will have our final 7:30am vinyasa class, a closing ceremony, and say our goodbyes over breakfast. Check out is at 12:00pm. Your pre-arranged Amstar transfers will be waiting for you at the front of the hotel. You'll return home with a newfound appreciation for all of your senses, and the deep inward and expansive outward journeys they can take you on.
